Pelvic Pain


Pelvic pain is a common problem for women and occurs mostly in the lower abdomen. The pain can be a mild ache or it can be severe, causing interruption to normal daily activities. Some women will have pain during their menstrual cycle, during ovulation, during or after intercourse or with urinary or bowel movements. Pelvic pain can be intermittent or a constant issue.

Chronic pelvic pain is defined as pelvic pain that lasts 6 months or more. Often women with CPP suffer from depression, fatigue, and changes in activity and behavior.

Treatment Options

Treatment of pelvic pain will depend on the cause, if one can be determined. Medications may be prescribed (antibiotic, hormones, pain medication) to help alleviate the pain or condition causing the pain. However, surgical intervention may be necessary to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of the pain.
